چکیده
A new reduced size ITER-RC superconducting tokamak concept is proposed with the goals of studying burn physics either in an inductively driven standard tokamak (ST) mode of operation, or in a quasi-steady state advanced tokamak (AT) mode sustained by non-inductive means. This is achieved by reducing the radiation shield thickness protecting the superconducting magnet by 0.5 m relative to ITER and limiting the burn mode of operation to pulse lengths as allowed by the TF coil warming up to the current sharing temperature. High gain (Q 10) burn physics studies in a reversed shear equilibrium, sustained by RF and NBI current drive techniques, may be obtained.

The importance of the toroidal magnetic field for the feasibility of a tokamak burning plasma experiment
The next step in the demonstration of the scientific feasibility of a tokamak fusion reactor is a DT burning plasma experiment for the study and control of self-heated plasmas. In this paper, we examine the role of the toroidal magnetic field on the confinement of a tokamak plasma in the ELMy H-mode regime – the operational regime foreseen for ITER. It is commonly taken for granted that the nex...

Recent experiments on the spherical tokamak have discovered the conditions to create a powerful plasma and ensure easy shaping and amplification of stability, high bootstrap current and confinement energy. The spherical tours (ST) fusion energy development path is complementary to the tokamak burning plasma experiment such as NSTX and higher toroidal beta regimes and improves the design of a po...
متن کاملNonlinear saturation of shear Alfvén modes and self-consistent energetic ion transport in burning plasmas with advanced Tokamak equilibria
Self-consistent nonlinear dynamics of Energetic Particle Modes, which are relevant for burning plasma conditions, are analyzed with respect to both saturation mechanisms and energetic particle transport. It is found that a “sensitive” parameter for Tokamak equilibria with hollow-q profiles is q at the minimum-q surface, higher q corresponding to larger particle transport. This fact has clear im...

Understanding the properties of high gain (alpha-dominated) fusion plasmas in an advanced toroidal configuration is the largest remaining open issue that must be addressed to provide the scientific foundation for an attractive magnetic fusion reactor. The critical parts of this science can be obtained in a compact high field tokamak which is also likely to provide the fastest and least expensiv...
